Narcissus - Item L01

An early 19th Century Grand Tour Bronze Statue of "Narcissus" with removable Fig Leaf.

A rare opportunity to purchase this fantastic museum-quality Nude Bronze Sculpture of Narcissus, even rarer to find him with a removable fig leaf, all anatomically correct for those curious to check. A novel collectors conversation piece and a great investment too.

The Victorian modesty prevailed and most bronzes from the Grand Tour had a fig leaf added permanently, or they were later cast with the fig leaf.

This bronze is finely cast with a clean, untouched patina. Unsigned, most likely cast by a Neapolitan foundry after the original sculpture by Vincenzo Gemito (1852-1925 Naples Italy).

The ancient original sculpture of Narcissus was found in 1862 in Pompeii, first identified as Narcissus, in subsequent years it was believed to be more likely that of Dionysus.
